Hello [Recipient First Name],
It's the Grammar of Grace annual tradition...
In 1776, representatives from all 13 colonies were sent to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in response to a crisis.
For years, there had been increasing lawbreaking and injustices committed against the people, by King George III and the Parliament back in England. The colonists had taken the cases to court; they had sent ambassadors to explain how the laws were being broken; they had written letters pleading for a return to justice and the rule of law. But the abuses only increased.
Then, the killing began. First, the English killed innocent colonists at the Boston Massacre. This was soon followed by open war, beginning at Lexington and Concord.
The 13 colonies determined to consult together, prayerfully, in hopes that they would be able to act with a unified voice.
And with the help of God, they did. They acted manfully, and wisely. These men didn't put on a show to make themselves look good; they carefully explained their cause, and took their stand, fully expecting that the result might be that they would be executed for treason, and their children made orphans and paupers.
As they sought God's help with absolute humility, He supported them and gave them courage.
And, in God's mercy, while many of them were killed, and many of their families did suffer privations, in the end their actions brought blessing to their posterity, and to the world. And they are an example to us, to this day, in our own time of crisis.
So here's Robyn again, as I do each year, encouraging you to make time on the 4th to read the Declaration of Independence. Enjoy your day off; grill something yummy; watch fireworks. But before you do those things (or maybe while you're doing them), teach your children why you're celebrating.
We're Classical Christian homeschoolers; we don't get distracted by the superficial fun, and lose sight of the actual purpose of the celebration—to remember God's workings, which He has done for us.

Dear friends, Happy Independence Day! And if you live outside of the Unites States, happy lovely homeschool day!
Grace & peace to you,
Robyn van Eck
